6. Children's Privacy (COPPA Compliance) and Age Assurance6.1 Family-Friendly Design
Halana Home Hub is designed for family use, including children. We take children's privacy seriously and comply with applicable laws including the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and state age-assurance requirements.
6.2 Age Verification and Assurance
In compliance with applicable state laws, we verify user age through the following methods:
- Parental Account Creation: Family accounts are created by parents/guardians (Admins) who must be at least 18 years old
- Parental Consent Model: By creating a family account, the parent/guardian provides consent for all family members, including children
- Account Management: Parents/guardians control all accounts within their family group and are responsible for verifying the age of all members
- Email Verification: Account creation requires email verification, which helps ensure account holders are legitimate
- Role-Based Access: Children are assigned "Member" or "Supporter" roles, which have limited permissions compared to Admin accounts
Age Verification Process:
- When a parent creates a family account, they represent that they are at least 18 years old and have authority to manage accounts for all family members
- Parents are responsible for ensuring children's accounts are created only with appropriate parental supervision
- We rely on parental representation and account management to verify ages, as the App is designed for family use under parental supervision
6.3 Parental Control
- Parents/guardians who create family accounts are responsible for:
- Managing all accounts within their family group
- Providing consent for children's use of the App
- Monitoring children's activity and content
- Verifying the age and identity of all family members
- Ensuring children do not create accounts without parental permission
- Configuring whether chores require photo proof (parents may disable camera use entirely)
6.4 Limited Data Collection
- We collect minimal information necessary to provide the service
- We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without parental consent
- Parents can review, modify, or delete their children's information at any time
- We do not collect more information from children than is reasonably necessary to participate in the App
- Completion photos uploaded by children are automatically deleted after admin review (approval or rejection)
6.5 Parental Rights
Parents have the right to:
- Review their child's personal information
- Request deletion of their child's information
- Refuse further collection of their child's information
- Request a description of the types of personal information collected from their child
- Contact us at [email protected] with any concerns
7. Photo Safety, Handling, and Child Protection7.1 Photo Uploads, Storage, and Retention
- Photo proof is configurable: Admins can create chores that do not require a photo. When photo proof is not required, the camera is never accessed and no image data is collected.
- When required, completion photos are uploaded to private, authenticated cloud storage (Supabase Storage). Photos cannot be accessed via direct URL without a valid, time-limited authentication token.
- Photos are organized by family ID to ensure isolation between families.
- Photos are automatically deleted from our servers once the Admin approves the chore. If a chore is rejected, the photo is also deleted at that time.
- Photos exist in our storage only for the duration of the approval process — typically minutes to hours.
- The URL reference in the chore record is cleared at the same time the file is removed.
7.2 Photo Moderation and Automated Scanning
We take photo safety seriously, especially for apps used by children:
- Manual Review (Primary Method): All photos must be reviewed and approved by Admins before points are awarded. This is the primary and most important safety mechanism. No photo will be approved without Admin review, regardless of automated scanning results.
- Automated Content Scanning (When Available): We use automated photo scanning technology (Google Cloud Vision API) to screen uploaded photos when the moderation service is available. Automated scanning supplements (but does not replace) manual Admin review. If the automated moderation service is unavailable or disabled, photos will still be subject to manual Admin review.
- Moderation Process:
- Photos are automatically scanned when the moderation service is available
- Photos flagged by automated scanning are rejected and deleted before reaching Admin review
- All photos that pass automated scanning (or when automated scanning is unavailable) must still be manually reviewed and approved by an Admin
- Admins must actively review all photos before approving chore completion, regardless of automated scanning results
- Zero Tolerance: We have a zero-tolerance policy for content that does not meet our community and safety standards
7.3 Parental Responsibility
- Parents/guardians are responsible for:
- Choosing whether chores require photo proof (can be disabled per chore)
- Monitoring photos uploaded by children during the approval window
- Reviewing and approving photos before points are awarded (Admin role)
- Educating children about appropriate photo content
- Reporting any inappropriate content immediately
7.4 Photo Access and Visibility
- Photos are stored in private, authenticated storage — they are not publicly accessible by URL
- Photos are only viewable by authenticated members of the same family group
- Photos cannot be shared outside the family group through the App
- Admins have full control over photo visibility and can reject (and thereby delete) photos at any time
- Photos are not searchable or indexable by search engines
7.5 Reporting Content Concerns
If you encounter content that does not meet our community and safety standards:
1. Contact the family Admin immediately
2. Report to us at [email protected] with "Content Report" in the subject line
3. Include details about the content and when it was uploaded
4. We will investigate and take appropriate action, which may include account suspension or termination
7.6 Photo Deletion
- Photos are automatically deleted after admin approval or rejection of a chore
- If a photo needs to be removed before the admin reviews it, contact us at [email protected]
- When an account or family group is deleted, all associated photos are also removed from our systems
